Example Episodes and Plot Lines
Here are some example episodes, based on actual events that occurred and
were captured at Justice High School during the 2011-2012 school year. Episode 1: A New School Year and Football Season Begin
The introduction of an alternative, at-risk school, Justice High, and the surprising
administration, students, football players, and cheerleaders that call it home.
Rival gang members and kids from different cliques come together to play on the
same team, cheer on the same squad, and study in the same classrooms. Of
course there are issues with new students adhering to the rules and regulations
of Justice High at the beginning of the school year. When news that the first
football game of the season has been canceled, Head Coach/Founding
Principal/former Judge, TJ Cole, schedules a game against a larger, well to do,
11-man squad (Justice usually plays 8-man football). The team readies for
battle, while the cheerleaders struggle to form their own bond. The team has no
field of their own, so they practice at 6:30 A.M. across town at Boulder High
School. The social and economic differences are clear, but these kids are very
familiar with playing against a stacked deck. Episode 2: The Underdogs
In a stunning upset, Justice High comes from behind and beats heavily favored
DʼEvelyn despite two Justice players being ejected from the game for throwing
their helmets. Three days later, game MVP, Jonathan, tests positive for cocaine,
marijuana and alcohol, and is sentenced to 120 days in jail, ending his season.
At school, valedictorian hopeful, Gaby, takes charge of the cheerleaders, and
quarterback, Alexis, deals with pregnancy news from his 17 year-old girlfriend.
The season then takes a turn to trials and tribulation, as loses bring further
conflict, and truly test the character of these young men. Episode 3: Final Game: Pot, Vandalism, ER
On the bus into the mountains toward rival Vail Christian, the smell of marijuana
is detected by the football coaches. Coach/Principal, Jeremy Jimenez, informs
the team a half-hour before game-time that he needs to know who has the
marijuana, or else the game will be forfeited, and theyʼll head home. Two kids
confess 7 minutes before the game, and are suspended for the rest of the
season, leaving Justice without a starting offensive/defensive lineman.
Meanwhile, the cheerleaders vandalize the schoolʼs lunch room. A severe
concussion forces senior Kiko to be taken to the emergency room during the
second half. Counselor/Cheerleading Supervisor, Mindy Logan, must resolve an
issue with her team. Teachers and students work hard to end the second quarter.
Student Ashley, a former cutter, prepares to graduate early in December. The
game against Vail Christian becomes the final game of the season, as rival Gilpin
cancels, lacking players. Episode 4: Art, Court, and a Justice Student in Jail
Fall turns to winter at Justice High. Football and cheerleading are now replaced
with Art class, Moot Court and Rec League Basketball. The Art class is taught by
talented artist, Joseph, who is doing a mural alongside Facebook graffiti artist,
David Choe, for Denver International Airport. Students go on a field trip to view
the work. 19 year-old, Bobby, returns to Justice after dropping out in an attempt
to graduate in May. Student, Jared, is sent to Boulder County Jail. In jail, an
interview showcases the harsh reality of an adult lock-up facility. The art
studentʼs work is displayed in their own art show in Boulder. Senior Moot Court
students Ilea and Christian, take the lead, and Advisor/Teacher, Steph, prepares
them for the competition. Episode 5: Student By Day, Liquor Store Manager at Night
A day-in-the-life profiles Bobby as he goes to school starting at 8 A.M, and then
works from 3 P.M. to 11 P.M. as a Manager at a local liquor store. The girlfriend
of Justice High quarterback/student, Alexis, has a baby boy. Valedictorian
hopeful, Gaby, begins to show signs of senior sabotage and nerves as she is
about to graduate a year early. Senior Katie continues on full-steam ahead,
excelling in her classes, and may challenge Gaby for the #1 class rank. Moot
Court participants thrive and do extremely well in the competition setting, glad
they arenʼt there for a real court date. Episode 6: Mad Dash to the Finish
Faculty and students make a mad dash for the finish line that is graduation. The
seniors have a variety of emotion, some anxious, some excited, and some
terrified of taking the next step. Principal Jimenez has a huge chart in his office
keeping tabs on what each senior needs to graduate. Faculty, especially Math
teacher Sheff, and English teacher Taimi, work long hours after school to help
students finish assignments and work. Gaby goes from Valedictorian hopeful to
now wondering if sheʼll be able to graduate at all. A meeting with the principal
will determine if sheʼll be able to walk. A trip out to Firestone, Colorado, yields a
day-in-the-life with Christian, who has gone from a shy kid at the beginning of the
year to a true leader at Justice High. Also, drug dogs, who have been brought to
the school throughout the year, find synthetic drug, Spice, on a student. Episode 7: Payday
The school year ends with a true payday: Graduation. A highlight of the lives of
the seniors, as many will be the first of their family to receive a high school
diploma. Christian is the role model for his family, showing his younger brothers
and cousin that anything is possible. Gaby and Principal Jimenez patch things
up and Gaby and her family are ecstatic as she walks across the stage. Katie
Dugoʼs hard work makes her Valedictorian. The class of 2012 moves their
tassels to the left in a heart warming and tear filled ceremony.
